Playing for the first time in 10 days, the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team shrugged off a sluggish first half and went on to blow out St. Ambrose JV 69-44 on Thursday night at John M. Lewis Gymnasium for its fifth straight victory.

KEY MOMENT

The Fighting Bees scored eight of the first 10 in the opening minute of the second half to take a 36-31 lead before the Chargers (7-2) went on a 16-0 run over the next 7½ minutes to take the lead for good.

SANDBURG STARS OF THE GAME
The game-changing run came after Sandburg subbed out the starting lineup and brought in reserves Kellian Thomas (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap), Ben Stipp (Abingdon, Ill./Abingdon-Avon), Brice Margenthaler (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Central), Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview) and James Jones (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier).

Margenthaler’s banked-in 3-pointer from the top of the key tied the game, and Young scored six of his seven points during that stretch, highlighted by a reverse layup that put the Chargers ahead. Young also had six rebounds.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Sophomore forward Deandrey Robinson (Peoria, Ill./Peoria) scored a game-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and blocked a pair of shots.
  • Freshman guard Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) scored 14 points on 5 of 9 shots.
  • Freshman Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) grabbed a team-best eight rebounds and handed out a team-leading three assists.

GETTING DEFENSIVE
Sandburg held St. Ambrose to just eight points and one field goal in the final 19 minutes.

FOR THE FIGHTING BEES
Freshman guard Nick Kelley, a Monmouth-Roseville product, had four 3-pointers and 14 points to lead the Bees.

UP NEXT
The Chargers will have a quick turnaround as they take on Missouri State-West Plains, ranked 16th in Division I, at 3 p.m. Friday in the Reed Overhead Door Classic hosted by Indian Hills.
